Rocket, a newly formed group consisting of internationally acclaimed musicians, has completed their debut album for Pursuance Records. The resulting recording contains an infectuous mix of rhythms, textures and melodies. Combining dance grooves with catchy compositions and extended space-jams, the band creates a fresh and accessible instrumental style. You can expect to hear California Soul, Fela Extensions and 80’s Miles come together to form a new genre that has been dubbed “Disco-Jazz” by listeners.

The members of Rocket joined forces in 2009, when they got together to jam and experiment with different new material written by keyboardist Emanuel Ruffler. Drummer and Percussionist Jaz Sawyer describes the band’s creative process: “…we are bringing together a number of musical developments that we have been making as individuals and as a collective. I think that we are all committed to a new direction – one that expresses our feelings in a way that fits the social environment. Nothing stays the same…“

– FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –

Pursuance Records Releases Rocket “Tipp Topp”

Trumpeter Duane Eubanks, the younger brother to guitarist Kevin and trombonist Robin, propelsthe music with inventive melodic lines, creating a classic and ultimately enchanting horn sound. Jaz Sawyer is best known for his drumming with the late Abbey Lincoln. On Tipp-Topp he puts forward a variety of highly syncopated and well architected grooves. Rashaan Carter has been playing bass in Wallace Roney’s band for several years and switches to electric bass for Rocket. Along with this core group we hear some of New York’s hottest instrumentalists: Bassisst extraordinatre Patrice Blanchard, flutist Michel Gentile and trumpet sensation Vitaly Golovnev perform on three selections. Sam Sadigursky and Adam Niewood contribute additional reeds throughout the record.

Composer Emanuel Ruffler has made a name for himself as an important creator of modern music. His tunes have been picked up by artists including Meshell Ndegeocello, drum legend Joe Chambers or fashion designer Emanuel Ungaro for one of his commercials. Ruffler won the Thelonious Monk Composers Competition in 1998. His first Pursuance release,“Nightflight” (PRER01), received critical acclaim and international airplay. Bruce Lindsay writes on All About Jazz: “Nightflight is an atmospheric album. Ruffler has composed a set of tunes that have an almost cinematic quality to them… characterized by an apparent simplicity and a propulsive rhythm, creating an immediately appealing recording.”

With Rocket, Ruffler’s compositions are breaking new ground. Jaz Sawyer describes the band’s creative process: “…we are bringing together a number of musical developments that we have been making as individuals and as a collective. I think that we are all committed to a new direction – one that expresses our feelings in a way that fits the social environment. Nothing stays the same…“

” I enjoyed what Pinto, Armstrong, Tranchina and Sawyer had to say musically. I’m looking forward to hearing more. Pick up the album, it’s a solid listen. “Inner State” is a strong first effort.” Atane Ofiaja, Music Review - Elements Of Jazz

Branice’s incredible four-octave voice and magnificent song stylings have been hailed throughout the world. She was also the conductor of the Youth Chorale for the West Coast premier of INDABAwritten by and performed with Sweet Honey In The Rock.
