-Their forays into into jamband psychedelic jazz, world and electronica deepened with more recent releases – Sacrifices to the Neon Gods and The Angel Wars. For recent recordings and performances they have been combining forces with the award-winning Jane Ira Bloom, the possessor of “one of the most gorgeous tones and hauntingly lyrical conceptions of any soprano saxophonist” (Pulse); guitarist Page Hamilton, leader and founder of the wildly influential and Grammy-nominated band Helmet; and the eclectic and virtuosic Gary Lucas, “one of the best and most original guitarists in America” (Rolling Stone).

The fruits of these collaborations can be heard on their recent releases Celestial Ghetto and Tuning In To Tomorrow (on iTunes too). Popular Science includes some of the greatest covers of all time, in which they return after long hiatus to wild reinterpretations of famous pop-culture “standards”.

-Page Nye Hamilton (born May 18, 1960 in Portland, Oregon) is a singer, guitarist and record producer, mostly noted for his work with alternative metal band Helmet. Most of his work has been in the heavy metal or hard rock styles, but Hamilton has an experimentalist streak, and has worked in other genres. Raised in Medford, Oregon, Hamilton moved to New York to study jazz guitar. While there, he “discovered distortion” and joined Band of Susans. Hamilton worked with composer Glenn Branca, after which he started Helmet. Helmet’s albums at that time included Strap It On, Meantime, Betty, and Aftertaste.

Mlumbo was founded in the late 1980s by Robert Mbotto Ray and Zombie Ron Boggs as an escape from commercial music (they were then in a rock band managed by Mick Jagger’s manager that included future Helmet leader Page Hamilton). To their surprise, early handmade cassettes began selling briskly at local record stores leading to radio play on over 100 U.S. stations and many rave reviews.

Over the years, M’lumbohas released 8 albums and had tracks included on five compilations. They have done commercials, films and work for MTV and MTV 2. Their work has drawn countless enraptured reviews, received an ocean of comparisons to Miles Davis, Sun Ra and the Orb. Fans of the band include such disparate avatars as Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Brian Eno, Carly Simon, djs Olive and Spooky, Neil Young and Tom Waits.

Group members have worked as sideman, directors, editors and sound designers to a host of world-class artists ranging from Abbey Lincoln to Luther Vandross, from Gil Evans to Pearl Jam. The group has given countless orgiastic and enthralling performances at both the old and new Knitting Factory and other N.Y.C. venues with opening acts such as Neotropic, Sean Lennon, Badawi, Mantronix, virtual reality inventor Jaron Lanier, Jojo Meyers Nerve, dj Muttamasik and Duncan Sheik, among others. Their shows draw consistent recommendations from Time Out New York and the Village Voice.

From their origins as a “post-modern to a fault, brilliantly silly seven-piece jazz/funk/afro pop improvisarama” (Richard Gehr, Village Voice), they have metamorphosized into, first a smaller unit that “delivers upon the wasted promise of ambient music” (Alternative Press) and finally into the current line-up of six extraordinary musicians, two innovative and fast-rising filmmakers and one live soundman whose “audiovisual spectacle zeroes in on the fever dream elements of exotica” (Douglas Wolk, Village Voice).

M’lumbo has spent the last five years cultivating a new style born from the underground “d8E” parties of the early 21st century. In the wake of increased police pressure and the completion of the scene’s esoteric mission, Mlumbo has emerged to bring it’s psychedelic message to a mainstream audience.

Mike Irwin Johnson started The 8 Legged Monster in 2007 to bring an element to the San Francisco Jazz community that has been lacking in recent years: the excitement of densely arranged small group big-band music which honors tradition and encourages exploration. Since its conception, the 8 Legged Monster has been turning the heads of SF’s Jazz community. The arrangements offer the classic sound of early Bebop with an entirely new attitude and approach to harmony. 8LM has such a distinct sound because they encompass all the musical styles that the jazz lineage has passed through, from swing to free-jazz, yet they have an entirely original and fresh sound. They have already become a favorite group among the jazz musicians in SF, and they’re hailed as one of the most entertaining and fun new bands to see.

www.8leggedmonster.com

8LM are bringing the powerhouse back into Deluxe for a little reunion show. Got a great band lined up:

Mike Irwin Johnson, Mike Olmos, Danny Grewen, Rob Barics, Fil Lorenz, Patrick Wolff, Dan Heffez, Dan Heffez, Adam Shulman, Jeff Marrs

Drummer Jaz Sawyer is now an official Remo Artist!

Drummer’s Drumhead Company
First and foremost, let’s get something straight. Remo® is a drummer’s drumhead company. After all, for over 50 years, Remo has constantly and consistently broken new ground when it comes to industry firsts. While we were doing what we do best, the competition continued to chase, follow and mimic our technological prowess. Better yet, by the time they even came close to catching up, we were already onto the next big idea. Ultimately, when it comes to our skills as a drumhead manufacturer, no one can touch the technical and musical advantages that Remo drumheads always provide.

We ask Jaz about the deal and his response was simply “It is a dream come true!”. To lean more visit Remo and www.jazsawyer.com

The fruits of these collaborations can be heard on their brand-new releases Celestial Ghetto and Tuning In To Tomorrow (on iTunes too) as well as on their forthcoming album of covers, on which they return after long hiatus to wild reinterpretations of famous pop-culture “standards”.

-Vanessa Bley and Stuart Matthewman, and what he doesn’t know about making music isn’t worth knowing. Believe me. He plays guitar, but he played tenor sax for Vanessa and that’s what swung it.. Trying to pigeon hole his music is like trying to solve a Rubic Cube with vaseline. He’s the one stage right of Sade, who pens film soundtracks and listens to everything from Mahler to Dub. Oh, and I forgot, Stuart cycles. But a lot, and very fast.

Together Vanessa and Matthewman – going Dutch on playing, producing and songwriting duties – have created a new music that’s both analgesic and heartwarming, and super cool. Elemental, primal music to unwind to; to escape into, and fall in love to. Like that feeling you got when you first heard Chet Baker sing. Perfect for a Saturday night through Sunday morning…

http://www.theboweryelectric.com/?m=20130302&cat=6

Page Hamilton and the Jazz Wannabes

Page Nye Hamilton (born May 18, 1960 in Portland, Oregon) is a singer, guitarist and record producer, mostly noted for his work with alternative metal band Helmet.

After Helmet split up in 1999, Hamilton started Gandhi, and toured with David Bowie. About this time he recorded with Ben Neill. He recorded Zulutime (duets with Caspar Brötzmann), played guitar on Ben Neill’s Goldbug and Joe Henry’s Trampoline, and wrote some music for the movie Heat. Hamilton has also made appearances on “Unbeliever” by Therapy? and “No, You Don’t” by Nine Inch Nails. Hamilton restarted Helmet with an altered line-up in 2004, and they released the album Size Matters. Helmet released their latest album, Monochrome, on 18 July, 2006. Hamilton has also done production work, including producing “Distort Yourself” by Institute, the new band started by Gavin Rossdale of Bush. Hamilton was also at the helm for Bullets and Octane’s second album, In The Mouth Of The Young, released in 2006, and has produced Totimoshi and the upcoming Classic Case album Losing at Life due out early 2007.
